Great photograph of a great airplane, with wonderful perspective, reflections, sky, colors and composition! When I looked at your webpage, I was drawn to this photo, as my wife and I were passengers in a DC-3 flying from Johannesburg SA to Kruger Park in 1980! It was a rough ride by today's standards, but got us to our destination safe and sound! I will be following the wonderful photos in your Collection! F/L

Greg Reed replied:

Morris, I appreciate the wonderful comment and the F/L!!! Although The NASM gives the record to a Eastern Airlines DC3 Captain - my father a retired, USAir Captain, has the log books to show he holds the record for the most time and years in 121 Airline PAX domestic service in the USA in a DC3.

Design work began in 1934 at the insistence of C.R. Smith, president of American Airlines. Smith wanted two new planes — a longer DC-2 that would carry more day passengers and another with railroad-type sleeping berths, to carry overnight passengers.

The first DC-3 built was the Douglas Sleeper Transport — also known as Skysleepers by airline customers — and it was the height of luxury. Fourteen plush seats in four main compartments could be folded in pairs to form seven berths, while seven more folded down from the cabin ceiling. The plane could accommodate 14 overnight passengers or 28 for shorter daytime flights. The first was...
